Art Exhibition“Across the Waters”
by Hsu Chia-Wei , Sao Sreymao and Savanhdary Vongpoothorn Currents – Phnom Penh Art and Urban Festival opens with an art exhibition and dance performance at Hiroshima House. The art exhibition “Across the Waters”features works by Hsu Chia-Wei (Taiwan), Sao Sreymao (Cambodia) and Savanhdary Vongpoothorn (Laos/Australia) who together explore historical and contemporary forms of exchanges and influences through trade, religion, and culture. Chia-Wei,through a two-channel video installation with a dream-like quality, narrates a history of Dutch trade of deerskin in Asia in the 17th century which caused a war in Cambodia. Savanhdary weaves together strips of scripts from Rama Jataka, the Lao telling of the Ramayana, in her paintings as an artistic gesture to piece together these broken narratives, and to reflect on her fragmented memories and history as a refugee. Sreymao questions the paradox of cultural practice in offering pigs for the pig year, amidst the new Cambodian economic tie with a foreign
government. |
