Pachara Chairuengkitti, born in 1984, lives and works in Ratchaburi province, received a BFA in Communication Design at the School of Fine and Applied Arts, Bangkok University. He researches and develops an artistic provincial accent project that emphasizes on the characteristics of rural accent, through graphic and typographic design that can be applied for particular use on each occasion. He explores the syllable and pronunciation method for provincial accent. According to his research and development of artistic provincial accent project, Pachara creates additions to the original Thai tone marks and combines two tone marks for each syllable of local accent, for example, the word “Hma” (dog) is divided into Hma and Ah sounds, using his created tone marks similar to the original ones, yet, combining with another symbol of tone mark to create a particular pronunciation that represents the root of certain rural accent. His research, development and creation embrace significant role towards the concept of localism, revealing that the local cultural root is declined by central culture. The concept of centralism arose in conjunction with the power structure that passed down for a period of time, has affected provincial languages and rural accents and were rarely documented literally. As many societies recognized written language sacred, therefore, the invented writing characters stand for central language accent, instructed through compulsory education to diminish the diversity of languages and assimilate as Thai central language which does not truly reflect the existing accent of spoken language.
