Kaensan Rattanasomrerk
Kaensan Rattanasomrerk was born in 1989 in Bangkok, Thailand. He graduated and received a Bachelor’s Degree from the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communications, Thammasat University. His works have been exhibited in several international film and art festivals, such as Kuan-Du Film Festival in Taipei, Taiwan in 2012. The works include "Substantial" which was exhibited in In Transit exhibition held at The Art Center, Office of Academic Resources, Chulalongkorn University in 2013, "Exit" in collaboration with Jakrawal Nilthamrong which was exhibited at URS21 Chung Shan Creative Hub, Taipei, Taiwan in 2013, and "Enclose" which was exhibited at Treasure Hill Artist Village, Taipei, Taiwan in 2014. He also participated in Tokachi Artist in Residence, Hokkaido, Japan in 2014. Kaensan's works often focus and raise questions on social phenomena published across mainstream media. His works also convey some notable remarks towards disputable contexts of truth and beliefs that influence public opinions. In Bangkok Layers exhibition, Kaensan brings up a topic about stability and beliefs, displaying events at his chosen case study area which is the Erawan Shrine at the Ratchaprasong intersection. The place, considered the center of sacred beliefs, draws people in and outside Thailand together and acts as a modern dominant symbol of Bangkok’s economy and politics. Kaensan presents a 2-channel video installation with narratives describing his personal stories regarding the bombing at the Erawan Shrine in 2015 which reveals how the governmental jurisdiction and political groups exploited people’s beliefs and sacredness, and hid another set of truth behind the event. The repeated and indecipherable abstract motions Kaensan presents in his video installation highlights the limitation access to the truth people are facing in the context of places and spaces under a condition of time.
